Christian Music

Christian Music has made some pretty dramatic changes since its birth.  It started out as Psalms, written by King David, the Sons of Asaph, and many others.  This evolved into the hymn genre, from the 16th century until now, featuring such remarkable songwriters as Martin Luther, Fanny J. Crosby, and John Newton.  Today we have a quite a diverse variety of Christian music compiled over the years, from Gregorian Chants to Screamo!

An interesting thing to note is that many hymns came from bar songs.  Someone heard the song and gained an inspiration.  Throughout history, secular songs and style have been adapted to Christianity - for many reasons, but the prevailing idea is toward a greater witness - approaching the unsaved at their level.

Typically, in today's church, there are many, usually older folks, who lean toward the traditional hymns they heard growing up.  Similarly, the younger generations graduate more toward modern worship music.  There is no guideline except the believer's personal preference.  Psalm 33:3 says "Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy." - new music is not evil - you can shout to the Lord with whatever song you like.
